Independence can mean a lot of things to a lot of people.

First, I am grateful for the men and women who serve this great country of ours. Our Freedoms come from your sacrifices and saying “thank you” just isn’t enough. I will love and support you any way I can and uphold your values just as you protect mine.  We would not be where we are today without you!  We appreciate all you are and all you do!

Second, I am grateful for the intellect and ability to have a successful career. Women have come a long way over the past century and I am proud to be in a company that shows no discretion when it comes to support and promoting those that deserve it.  I love doing what I love to do for a company and superiors that love me back.

Third, I am grateful to have my personal independence over the past couple of years.  I have overcome obstacles and changed my perspective to welcome positivity, unconditional love and complete support. I am no longer bound by someone else’s disease and unhappiness. I no longer have to plan my day around someone else’s mood or reaction to a substance.  I no longer have to stay up at night worried that someone is making bad choices and could hurt themselves or others.  I no longer have to attend therapy to figure out what I need to change.  I no longer have to worry about my safety.

Last, but not least, I am grateful to have found someone that truly appreciates all that I am.  I don’t have to try to party so he likes me, I don’t have to try to “be cool” with things I’m not comfortable with and I can just be myself.  He doesn’t wonder when he’s going to get “his time.”  He is patient and kind and he understands. He sees my huge heart and has one for me in return.  He adores everything about me. He is honest and trustworthy and doesn’t want to change me in any way.  This is a freedom from concern and worry I’ve never experienced.  How awesome to feel you are enough.  How amazing to know that someone will put me second while I do the same (our babies come first).  He is an amazing example of a man for my girls.  He loves how I love them and he knows they are my world.  He can make me laugh all the time… that deep belly laugh that hurts and that is the most fun!!

I have so much to be grateful for this Independence Day.  I will reflect on the past growth and triumphs and recognize my independence and what it means to me.  Let me know what Independence means to you…
